Five Practices - Meeting 3 Notes

We had a great discussion concerning Intentional Faith Development; the third of the five practices of fruitful congregations. The discussion began with defining what intentional was and how it fir in with our faith development. It was said that intentional meant "deliberate ef

fort." Our faith doesn't just 'develop' by itself. That is why our intentionality is so important.

We considered various ways that our church might aid intentional faith development. As we asked each person in attendance there were many suggestions. Here are a some of the ideas and discussion notes:

Five Practices Meeting 2 Notes

This week we discussed passionate worship. Steve Lee was our leader and gave us a working definition of passionate and then we discussed what worship was and wasn't. He showed a video (see below) that helped us understand what worship was.

We came away realizing that passionate worship was "an extraordinary eagerness to honor God in worship." Worship, after all, isn't about us. It isn't about whether the guitar was too loud or the organist hit wrong notes. Worship is more than that. It is a giving of ourselves.

Lent - Spring Cleaning

So…how do you feel about spring cleaning? Do you love it? Do you hate it? I know some people who love spring cleaning. After a long, cold winter that is spent inside, they see spring as an opportunity to be more active, take inventory, and begin cleaning up their households, yards, and anything else they can think of. They get things in order. Perhaps things have put off during the winter. They thought about cleaning this, or taking care of that, but it was too cold, the weather was too bad, or they just wanted to stay inside. Well, welcome to “Spring Cleaning.”

Five Practices Blog

Robert Schnase, the UMC bishop who wrote the Five Practices book, has a website and blog about the practices. The address is http://www.fivepractices.org/. From that website you can find other information regarding the Five Practices.

Easter Cantata Practice

Practice for the 2009 Easter Cantata has started! Every Wednesday at 6 pm come and join the choir as we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus in song. Everyone is invited to come and lend a voice. Singing is a wonderful way to celebrate and worship! Even if you don't plan on singing in the choir, you are still welcome to sing in the Cantata! Hope to see you there.

Five Practices Meeting 1 Notes

The first meeting of the Five Practices Lenten discussion took place on March 2nd. We had 14 people in attendance. The topic was radical hospitality. There was quite a bit of discussion. First, a definition of radical hospitality was offered. We began to understand that radical hospitality was welcoming the stranger. The question of the night was, how well do we do that?

We discussed what the condition of our church said to first time visitors. We discussed whether the bathrooms were easy to find, and if our signs were appropriate.

We talked about how best to introduce ourselves to people we don't know. We decided that saying something like, "Hi, I don't think I've met you" or "Hi, my name is [input your name here], I don't think I know your name." Of course there are other ways to do this. The important point is to realize that we are to welcome those who come. Instead of asking someone who the new person is, we decided we would ask them ourselves.
