August 2011 Finance Article

Finance Committee News

This is a brief report of the financial situation of the North Judson United Methodist Church for the first half of 2011.

The Pork Chop Dinner was a success! Although there were fewer dinners served, we still had a profit of $1500.00. $750.00 will go into the Parsonage Fund and $750.00 will go to the Church Camp Fund. Thank you all for your support of the dinner!

For the past few weeks, the weekly giving has declined substantially. The committee is hoping that this is just a typical summer effect and that the offerings will will soon return to normal levels. Because of this lower amount coming in, we have only been able to pay the first 3 months of our tithes to the conference. Last year, we were able to pay 100% of the tithes. There is still time to make up the difference for this year.

The Parsonage Fund is on schedule. The original loan was for a 10 year payout with hopes to do so in 5 years. At the current rate of giving, the mortgage should be paid off in 7 1/2 years after purchase.

Overall, the NJUMC is current on all bills and salaries, behind by 3 months on our tithes to the conference, and on schedule with the parsonage.
Our church is like some households, living from paycheck to paycheck. In our case, from Sunday offering to Sunday offering. We all need to pray about and think about our degree of stewardship to our church and to ask God for direction in strengthening our church.

Thank you all for your loyal stewardship to our church.

On behalf of the Finance Committee: Dave Altman

August 2011 Pastor's Article

I want to do something a little different this month. I've been thinking about the difference between contentment and complacency. In doing some searches I ran accross this article from Chuck Swindoll. Here it is in its entirely. As I read it I had to ask myself, "Have I become complacent in my faith and my journey?"

Prophet Sharing, Part One
by Charles R. Swindoll

Amos 3:7-8

Have you noticed? Some people have the uncanny ability to see so far into tomorrow, you feel like you're operating in the shadows of yesterday. While you and I are evaluating where we've been, those forward-thinking people are forever exploring where we're going. Instead of reacting, they're on the offense . . . probing, innovating, analyzing, and warning---always warning. While we search for ways to settle in and find comfort on our sofa-like surroundings, they are confronting the consequences of reality, facing the music before we even realize the prelude has begun.
